Alissa Spencer, Counseling Intern

As a former teacher and natural health & wellness advocate, my purpose is to help and support people.  I am passionate about creating safe communal spaces and sharing valuable knowledge that assists us in becoming our best selves and live fulfilling lives.  In my personal life, I hold a deep passion for nature and spend my time camping and boating in the summer, snowboarding and snowmobiling in the winter, hiking and gardening in the spring, and backpacking in the fall.  I also love yoga, meditation, cooking, music, and traveling.  I cannot go a day without being outside, moving my body, and coffee & chocolate!

Who I work with

Individuals: I work with adults and young adults who are experiencing struggles with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, trauma, changes in life, divorce, parenting, pregnancy, postpartum, relationship challenges.

Groups: Group counseling can be a powerful therapeutic mode of processing and healing. I offer occasional group workshops in which individuals can deepen their awareness and growth by experiencing connection and common humanity with a small community experiencing similar difficulties.

My Philosophy

I hold a radically accepting and compassionate container that welcomes all identities and helps you learn to radically accept yourself and embody the self-compassion that you deserve. I am trained in Mindfulness-Based techniques to help you better identify and regulate your emotions, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help you gain awareness of and transform your thoughts, and Somatic Therapy to help you release emotions and trauma that are stored in the body. I help you discover your unique values, needs, and the necessary actions that will allow you to create the life that you desire to live. I believe that by taking a whole-person approach, we can optimize wellness in body, mind, emotion, and spirit, reduce negative symptoms, and support the best version of you.

Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.”

– Mahatma Gandhi
